Released in 1996, Subtle Punch was recorded piece-meal over 2 years in studios where Ken was working as a TV producer working with sound engineers mixing on-air promos for VH1. After years of recording on a low-end 4 track cassette recorder, Ken found himself in high-end tv production studios with $10, 000 microphones. Eventually, the engineers with whom he regularly worked became friends and became aware Ken was a songwriter. Every so often there would be some time left over after the official work got done and Ken would jump into the booth and record something of his. Possibly a month later they might find time to take that recording of a basic track and do some overdubs. In this fashion, little by little, over two years, 14 songs were made.
